Why we’re seeing more older age-group athletes caught doping

Over the past few weeks, several high-profile cases in the United States have highlighted a growing issue in endurance sport: older male age-group athletes testing positive for testosterone and related substances. This isn’t coincidence, and it isn’t hysteria. It’s the result of cultural shifts, increased testing, and a misunderstanding of what ageing in sport actually requires.

For many men in their 40s, 50s and beyond, the physiological reality of ageing collides with competitive ambition. Recovery slows, muscle mass becomes harder to maintain, and training feels less forgiving than it once did. At the same time, testosterone replacement therapy has become increasingly normalised in general health settings. The problem is that “medically prescribed” does not equal “competition legal”. Without a valid therapeutic use exemption, testosterone remains a banned performance enhancer, regardless of intent.

What’s changed recently is visibility. Masters athletics, cycling and endurance events are testing age-group athletes more consistently than in the past. As a result, behaviour that may have gone unnoticed a decade ago is now being sanctioned. This can create the impression of a sudden surge in doping, when in reality it’s a combination of better detection and poor understanding of the rules.

At Aloha Tri Coaching, we work with a large number of older athletes and we’re clear on our position. You do not need banned substances to train well, race well, or stay competitive as you age. What you do need is a smarter approach.

Successful older athletes train with intent rather than volume, prioritise recovery as seriously as hard sessions, and use strength training to support performance and longevity rather than chase numbers. They respect sleep, stress and fuelling as performance tools, not afterthoughts. Most importantly, they accept that ageing isn’t something to fight chemically, but something to manage intelligently.

Endurance sport has always been about patience and consistency. Those qualities matter even more with age. The athletes who last, and the ones who truly perform, are the ones who adapt rather than reach for shortcuts.
